In her personal essay "The Story of My Body," Judith Ortiz Cofer describes the discrimination she faced growing up and how everyone's perception of her depended on the society she was living in. Consider the questions below based on the reading and personal experience.

Ortiz Cofer discusses her childhood difficulty and the perceptions that her community and peers have had on who she became. She noted that she was viewed differently depending on her location. Do you think that an individual’s happiness relies on how they are perceived by others? How much does our self-esteem and how we view ourselves depend on our location?

As location changes so does perception, what is the current perception in America as far as racism and other discrimination against appearance? In other words, what does American society consider acceptable/beautiful and what does society consider to be undesirable?

B6: Week 7 Reading Questions

Here are our two questions we think people should consider while reading:

• Compare the sexism present in the Goodyear commercial we saw last Friday with the sexism presented in the reading "Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt." What is your reaction to each type of sexism? Which type do you feel is more damaging to women and why?
• Consider areas in the reading where society blames the woman for the sexual assault-- the 3 year old molestation case, the rape victim and the victoria's secret underwear, etc. Do you think women would feel protected if they knew sexual assault would always be punished? Or do you think women will always feel a need to keep quiet? Would women feel more confident in coming forward and reporting sexual assault or would there still be a failure to feel safe enough to speak up? What about the trial process in a sexual assault case can discourage women from coming forward?

These are both kind of long. But we thought there was a lot to consider with each question.

B5: Week 6 Reading Questions

Group Neon poses the following questions:

Do you believe that parents should be able to change the sexual structure of their children (such as in the case of Reimer) solely based on their behavior in their youth? Or do you believe that they should wait and let their child decide what they want?


Since this is a yes/no question which will perhaps lead to limited conversation and repetition of answers, please feel free to go other directions and discuss other ideas this week's readings brought up for you.

The author equates the current struggle of the LBGT (Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender) community to the inequality that women received through the twentieth century. Do you believe LBGT will ever receive equal rights and what will need to be accomplished in order to achieve this equality?

 

Do LBGT deserve the right to marry? Why or why not?

 

Will our society ever accept cross dressers into the professional world, or will being LBGT become a "glass ceiling" as it has become for women holding jobs traditionally done by men?

Critics argue that too much of ASU’s budget is spent on athletics--football and basketball in particular. In an attempt to lower subsidies for sports, ASU is pushing for their athletic programs to become "financially self-sustaining" in the near future. Is this a realistic goal? Should ASU spend more on educational activities as opposed to athletics?

After reading about how ASU spends its budget, how do you feel about the hikes in student tuition? How might ASU justify its high salaries for top administration?
